A learning style quiz based on Kolb's experiential cycle

David Kolb proposed, in 1984, that learning is a 4-stage cycle across 2 independent axes: how you absorb a new experience (from Concrete Experience, living something directly, to Abstract Conceptualization, understanding through theory and logic) and how you process that experience (from Reflective Observation, thinking before acting, to Active Experimentation, testing and acting right away).

Combining the 2 axes, the model describes 4 learning styles: Diverging (concrete and reflective), Assimilating (abstract and reflective), Converging (abstract and active) and Accommodating (concrete and active). This quiz uses 12 statements (drawn from a pool of 18) to place you in that 2-dimensional space and show your dominant style on a quadrant chart.

How the result is calculated

Each of the 12 statements (6 drawn from the Concrete-Abstract axis, 6 from the Reflective-Active axis) uses a 1-to-5 agreement scale, some reverse-worded to avoid response bias. Answers are summed per axis and normalized to 0-100, your final position on the 2 axes sets the distance to each of the 4 styles, the closest one (with a "mild" or "pronounced" variant depending on intensity) is your result.

This quiz is our own implementation inspired by Kolb's 4-style concept, widely described in open academic literature (pedagogy textbooks, papers), it is not the original Learning Style Inventory (LSI), which is a commercial instrument currently sold by Korn Ferry/Experience Based Learning Systems. Every statement was written from scratch for this site.

Diverging (Mild)

You tend to absorb a new experience by watching calmly before acting, and you like looking at a situation from several angles before drawing a conclusion, a pattern that shows up more with new or emotionally loaded topics than in everyday routines. You don't reject theory or action, you just prefer not to skip steps. To study well, lean on demonstrations, group discussion, brainstorming and a bit of guided reflection before applying a new idea in practice.

Diverging (Pronounced)

Your way of learning is consistently geared toward observing and reflecting before acting: you gather as many perspectives as possible on a concrete situation before taking a stance, and you'd rather learn by watching something happen or discussing it with others than by studying an isolated theory. It's the style most associated with brainstorming, empathy and the ability to see a problem from angles others miss. To study, prioritize discussion groups, real case studies and reflection journals over standalone theory manuals.

Assimilating (Mild)

You tend to prefer understanding the logic and theory behind a subject before applying it, and you usually process that understanding by reflecting calmly, without rushing to act. This shows up more with technical or abstract subjects than in everyday simple decisions. You're not averse to practice, you just like having a solid mental model first. To study, lean on structured readings, well-organized lectures and summaries built as outlines or concept maps.

Assimilating (Pronounced)

You absorb new knowledge almost always through theory and logic, and you process it in a careful, reflective way, building consistent conceptual models before considering any practical application. Well-structured abstract ideas appeal to you more than the lived experience itself, and you tend to quickly spot a flaw in someone else's reasoning. To study, prioritize dense texts, well-grounded theories and organizing content into complete frameworks, leaving practical application for after you understand the whole picture.

Accommodating (Mild)

You tend to learn by doing, testing something in practice before digging into the theory behind it, and you usually adapt well when a plan suddenly changes. This shows up more in new or urgent situations than in routine tasks you've already mastered. You don't ignore theory, you just prefer confirming it by living the experience first. To study, lean on hands-on exercises, simulations and real projects, and don't hesitate to ask someone experienced instead of digging through a manual alone.

Accommodating (Pronounced)

Your way of learning is strongly geared toward action: you'd rather dive into a concrete experience and test solutions in practice than analyze theory before acting, and you adapt quickly when circumstances change, often trusting intuition and other people more than your own analysis. It's the style most associated with taking calculated risks and putting plans into practice quickly. To study, prioritize trial-and-error learning, real projects and direct mentorship over isolated reading.

Converging (Mild)

You tend to combine theory and action in a practical way: you like understanding the logic of a problem, but the real goal is applying it to solve something concrete, not staying stuck on the idea. This shows up more in technical tasks than in situations that require handling other people's feelings or opinions. To study, lean on direct application exercises, technical case studies and simulations where you test a specific solution to a well-defined problem.

Converging (Pronounced)

You absorb knowledge through theory and process it through action in a consistent way: your strength is taking an abstract idea and quickly testing it against a real problem, chasing the solution that works, not just the one that's elegant on paper. You tend to prefer working with data, systems and technical challenges over navigating complex interpersonal dynamics. To study, prioritize well-defined practical problems, technical simulations and constantly asking how a theory holds up when it's actually tested.

Frequently asked questions

They're complementary angles, not redundant ones. VARK measures your preferred input sensory modality, whether you absorb content best Visually, through Aural input, Reading/writing or Kinesthetically. The Kolb cycle doesn't ask about sensory channel at all, it measures how you process experience across 4 stages (concrete/abstract and reflective/active). You could, for instance, score mostly Visual on VARK and Converging on Kolb, they're different questions about the same act of learning.
