When does swapping L and R make sense?

The common case is audio captured with the sides reversed, what was L ends up in R and vice versa. It happens with mis-wired cables, interfaces with crossed outputs, or stems received from someone else with the wrong stereo image. A plain L↔R swap fixes it with zero degradation: it is a copy of samples.

What is polarity inversion (phase flip) and why does it matter?

Inverting polarity multiplies every sample by -1, mirroring the waveform around zero. On its own the result sounds identical to the original, the human ear cannot tell them apart. But as soon as the signal is summed with another, the relative polarity decides whether they reinforce or cancel. It is the tool for fixing two microphones out of phase on the same source, or aligning a DI with an amp mic.

If the inversion is inaudible, how do I know it worked?

The vectorscope. It plots L against R rotated 45 degrees: in-phase (mono) content forms a vertical column, wide content spreads the cloud out, and an inverted polarity tips the cloud onto the horizontal axis. That is the readout that makes visible an operation which, by definition, does not change the sound when heard in isolation. The per-channel meters and the L/R correlation complete the picture.

Does duplicating L to both sides create stereo?

No. It creates dual-mono: two channels with identical content. The file is technically stereo (2 channels), but there is no spatial information at all, no width, no placement. It is useful when one channel was accidentally silent and you want to hear the other one in both ears.

What happens if the file is mono?

Swapping or duplicating channels in a single-channel file means nothing: there is nothing to swap. Rather than hand back a file twice the size with two identical channels (which is what many tools quietly do), those operations are disabled here and a mono file stays mono. The one operation that remains available is the polarity flip, which is well defined on a single channel.

Which operation fixes a phase problem between microphones?

It depends on which channel is inverted. If the kick mic (say, channel R) is out of phase with the DI (channel L), invert only R and listen to the sum: if it got fuller, the fix is right. If it got thinner, go back. Use channel solo and the Original/Result switch to decide.

Can I use this with multichannel files (more than 2 channels)?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The operations act on the first two channels (L and R) and every further channel is preserved untouched on export. For full surround production, use a dedicated DAW.

Does the operation degrade audio quality?

Accepted Answer

No. The operations are mathematically exact: copying sample arrays or multiplying by -1. There is no resampling and no filtering. The only possible loss is at export: MP3 is lossy compression; WAV preserves the content in full.
