Splitting a bill sounds simple, but it gets messy with tips, people who ordered more, and cents that don't add up. This calculator handles all three: it applies the tip to the subtotal, divides the total by the number of people and, when you enable uneven shares, distributes by each person's weight (shares). The split uses the largest-remainder method working in cents, so the shares always sum to exactly the total, nobody pays a cent more or less. You can also round each share up (handy for cash and change) and pick the tip from presets of 0%, 5%, 10%, 12%, 15% and 20% or from the slider. A ready-made summary can be copied to paste into the group chat, and everything happens in the browser, with no sign-up or data sent anywhere.
First the tool computes the tip on the subtotal you type (for example, 10% of $100 = $10) and adds it to the total. Then it converts everything to cents, to avoid floating-point money errors, and divides the total by the people or by the weights given. Because it works in cents, the split never "loses" or "creates" money in rounding.
The trick to make the cents add up is the largest-remainder method: the tool rounds each share down, checks how many cents are left over, and hands them out one by one to the people whose share had the largest remaining fraction. That way the shares always equal the total charged. If you enable "Round up," each share rises to the next whole currency unit, which may push the sum a little above the total, on purpose, to make cash payment easier.
Example 1, even split with cents: a $100 bill, a 10% tip ($10), total $110, for 3 people. Each would owe $36.666…; since there's no fraction of a cent, two people pay $36.67 and one pays $36.66. The sum is exactly $110.00, with nothing left over or missing.
Example 2, uneven shares: a $90 bill, no tip, among 3 people with weights 2, 1 and 1. The weights sum to 4, so the first person pays 2/4 of the total ($45.00) and the other two pay 1/4 each ($22.50). Use this when someone ordered more, drank more or brought a guest.
It's ideal for splitting a restaurant, bar or trip bill, working out the right tip, splitting a subscription among friends, or dividing a shared expense when each person contributed differently. The copyable summary makes it easy to post who pays what in the group chat.
A few limits: the tip always applies to the amount you type, so if a service charge is already on the bill, type the amount without it (or leave the tip at 0% with the total already included). Currency formatting follows the site language, Real in Portuguese, Dollar in English, but the splitting logic is the same for any currency. And rounding up is optional precisely because it slightly changes the total.
