How the split is calculated

The math happens in two steps. First, the calculator finds the total fuel cost: distance (doubled for a round trip) divided by the car's consumption, multiplied by the fuel price. Then that total is divided by the number of passengers you enter, including the driver if they are also splitting the bill.
Note that this split covers fuel only. Tolls, parking and other trip costs, if the group is also splitting those, need to be added separately, this calculator does not fold them in automatically.
The calculator treats the passenger count as a whole number, minimum 1: an empty field, a zero, or a fraction like 3.5 gets rejected instead of silently rounded. That catches the most common splitting mistake, forgetting to count the driver in the division, or leaving a stray digit in the field. If the group changes size partway through the trip, someone gets dropped off early, just recalculate with the new passenger count from that point forward.

What is the ethanol 70% rule?

It is a popular Brazilian rule of thumb that compares only the pump price of the two fuels: divide the ethanol price by the gasoline price, and if the result is below 0.70 (70%), ethanol tends to be the cheaper choice. The rule exists because ethanol holds roughly 30% less energy per liter than gasoline, so a flex-fuel car covers fewer kilometers on a liter of ethanol than on a liter of gasoline.

Should the driver also count as a passenger in the split?

That is a group decision, not something the calculator enforces. If the driver is also paying their share of fuel, count them in the passenger number; if the arrangement is that the driver doesn't pay, use only the count of the other occupants.

Does round trip automatically add the distance twice?

Yes. With the round trip switch on, the distance you enter is multiplied by two before computing fuel and the split, so you only need to type the one-way distance.

What happens if I forget to count someone in the split?

The total fuel cost doesn't change, only the per-person amount. Rerun the calculation with the correct passenger count: the more people included, the smaller everyone's slice, since the numerator (the total cost) stays the same.
