Convert coordinates between Overworld and Nether and align your portals
In Minecraft, every block traveled in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. So to convert coordinates between dimensions, you divide or multiply the horizontal axes (X and Z) by 8, keeping the height (Y) the same. The calculator rounds the division down, so coordinates that are not multiples of 8 land on the nearest lower block. This tool does that conversion both ways and also generates a ready teleport command. The most important use is aligning portals: if you activate a portal on one side only, the game creates the pair on the other automatically, but not always where you want. By manually building the portal at the calculated coordinates, you ensure that fast travel through the Nether leads exactly to the expected destination. The tool also flags it when the Nether-side Y coordinate falls outside the buildable range (0 to 128).
The Nether is eight times smaller than the Overworld on the horizontal scale. To go from the Overworld to the Nether, divide X and Z by 8; for the reverse, multiply by 8. The Y height never changes. The division is rounded down, so X = 1005 in the Overworld becomes 125 in the Nether (1005 ÷ 8 = 125.625, rounded to 125).
That compression is what makes the Nether a shortcut: walking 1 block there covers 8 blocks here. A 100-block road in the Nether spans 800 blocks in the Overworld, which is why portal hubs are so useful for long journeys.
Example 1, your Overworld base is at (1000, 64, -2000). Dividing by 8: X = 1000 ÷ 8 = 125 and Z = -2000 ÷ 8 = -250, with Y = 64 kept. Build the Nether portal at (125, 64, -250) so it links to the base portal.
Example 2, you have a Nether hub at (30, 80, 45). Multiplying by 8: X = 30 × 8 = 240 and Z = 45 × 8 = 360, with Y = 80 kept. The matching Overworld portal should sit around (240, 80, 360).
Activate the portal on one side, convert the coordinates and build the pair exactly at the calculated position, ideally before crossing back. When there is no nearby portal in the destination dimension, the game creates a new one within a search area, and two portals too close together can end up linked to the same pair. Keeping portals well spaced and aligned by coordinates avoids this.
The 1:8 ratio and conversion apply to both Java and Bedrock; there are small differences in the portal search algorithm, but the alignment math is the same. The generated teleport command helps you check the destination quickly: in Java, the dimension ids are minecraft:overworld and minecraft:the_nether. If the Nether-side Y falls outside the 0 to 128 range, the tool flags that the destination may not exist naturally there.
