how to get a Portuguese NIF as a foreigner
The NIF is the 9-digit Portuguese taxpayer number, and almost everything in Portugal starts with it: a lease, a bank account, an electricity contract. This page sums up what the Tax Authority (AT) says about requests by foreigners and shows how to check the number you received.
Sum 139, remainder 7, digit 4.
The AT announced range 3 in 2019.
The PT is the country code in the VAT number.
A typical typing error.
Sum 447, digit 9 minus 7.
Each of the first 8 digits is multiplied by the weights 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and the products are added. The remainder of the division by 11 decides the ninth digit: 0 or 1 gives 0, and any other remainder r gives 11 minus r. For 204716624 the sum is 139, the remainder is 7 and the digit is 4.
Not necessarily. The AT page provides for an online request by a legal representative or attorney, with a power of attorney, through the e-balcão. Whoever applies in their own name goes in person to a Serviço de Finanças or Loja do Cidadão, by appointment.
The AT page consulted does not mention expiry. The number is yours, what changes is your status: when you become a Portuguese tax resident you must request an address change.
No. It only checks the number arithmetic and the taxpayer type. The request is always made to the AT, through official channels.
Valid NIF structure
This checks structure and arithmetic only. It does not prove the number was issued to anyone, or that the account exists.
