Significant figures are the digits in a number that carry real measurement information, they tell you how precisely a quantity is known. This tool analyzes the number as text, not as a floating-point value, to preserve meaningful trailing zeros such as '1.20' that a numeric parse would discard. It applies the standard rules: (1) every non-zero digit is significant; (2) zeros between non-zero digits are significant; (3) trailing zeros after a decimal point are significant; (4) leading zeros are never significant; and (5) trailing zeros in a whole number with no decimal point are ambiguous, which by conservative convention are counted as not significant. Each digit is color-coded with the exact rule that classified it, and the tool warns when a value is ambiguous, suggesting you rewrite it in scientific notation. Counting significant figures correctly is essential in physics and chemistry, where a result should not claim more precision than its least precise input.
Five rules cover every case. Non-zero digits are always significant. 'Sandwiched' zeros (between non-zero digits) count. Leading zeros only position the decimal point and never count. Trailing zeros to the right of the decimal point, after a non-zero digit, count, because they signal measured precision.
The tricky case is trailing zeros in a whole number without a decimal point, as in '1200': they are ambiguous. The tool treats them conservatively as not significant and issues a warning, scientific notation is the correct way to make explicit how many of them were actually measured.
Example 1, 0.00450: the two leading zeros after the decimal only position the number and do not count; that leaves the 4, the 5, and the trailing zero (which counts, since it follows a non-zero digit). Result: 3 significant figures.
Example 2, 1200: the 1 and the 2 are significant, but the two trailing zeros, with no decimal point, are ambiguous, the tool counts 2 figures and warns. Writing '1200.' (with a point) or 1.200×10³ makes all four significant.
Exact or counted numbers (for example '12 eggs' or a defined constant) have infinite significant figures and do not limit the result, this tool's count applies to measurements. In multiplication and division, the result should have as many figures as the factor with the FEWEST significant figures; in addition and subtraction, round to the LEAST decimal place shared by the operands.
That is why scientific notation is clarity's best friend: 3.20×10⁴ makes it obvious there are 3 figures, without the ambiguity of trailing zeros. Reporting too much precision is just as wrong as reporting too little.
