Converting stereo to mono looks trivial, but it hides one decision that changes the sound: how the two channels get combined. The default, averaging them, is the most common choice and also the only one that can destroy content, because if L and R are in opposite phase over some passage, the sum cancels and the result comes out hollow or nearly silent. So this tool does two things a blind conversion does not: it lets you hear each mixdown mode before you download, switching between the original and the result without losing your place in the track, and it measures phase correlation window by window across the file rather than printing one average that hides exactly the problem you need to see. Everything runs in the browser, on the PCM samples, via the Web Audio API. No data is sent to a server.

Averaging sums L and R and halves the result, which preserves centred content (vocals, kick) but can cancel anything recorded in opposite phase. The L and R modes simply discard one channel: you lose whatever only existed on the other side, but you gain a guarantee that nothing will cancel. When the correlation strip shows negative stretches, that is exactly the trade-off to weigh.
