North Node in your chart: mean or true?

The tool shows the mean and the true North Node side by side, with sign, degree and the South Node in the opposite sign. Near the change dates, the two can land in different signs.

What the lunar nodes are and why there are two versions

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the plane of the Earth's orbit (the ecliptic): the North Node is where it climbs, the South Node where it descends, always on opposite sides of the zodiac. Eclipses happen at these points, which is why tradition gives them special weight. The nodes move backward through the zodiac and complete a full turn in 18.6 years, which means about 1 year and 7 months in each sign.
The mean node uses a smooth formula that recedes about 19.3 degrees a year. The true node uses the Moon's real position and velocity at that instant to find the node of the osculating orbit. Because the Sun and planets perturb the Moon constantly, that node swings around the mean: in this tool's measurements between 1950 and 2030, up to 1.94 degrees to each side. In practice the two versions sit in the same sign almost always, but the ingress dates into each sign diverge by days or weeks, and anyone born in that gap may have a different sign depending on the source.
Compare the dates: the mean node entered Gemini on June 4, 2020, but the true node had already entered on May 5, almost a month earlier. For Taurus it was December 23, 2021 against January 18, 2022; for Aries, July 12 against July 17, 2023; for Pisces, January 29 against January 11, 2025; for Aquarius, August 18 against July 27, 2026 (all UTC). The tool's true node was checked against the Moon's osculating elements from JPL Horizons, with a difference below 0.02 degrees. The node card also shows the South Node in the opposite sign and the traditional reading of a direction of growth, which is a symbolic framework, not a prediction.

Full tool FAQ

How do I find my Venus sign without a birth time?

Venus spends 29 days in each sign on average, so on most days the date alone settles it. When Venus changes sign on your birth day, the tool shows the exact time of the change in the local time zone: those born before it have the earlier sign, those born after have the new one. Without a time, it lists both possibilities. With the time and the city, the result is fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Which North Node is the right one?

Both are used. The mean is steadier and common in books; the true one follows the real Moon. Pick one and stay with it. Checking both versions only matters if the birth date falls near a sign change.

How do I find the South Node?

The South Node is always in the sign opposite the North Node, at the same degree. If the North Node is at 28 degrees of Pisces, the South Node is at 28 degrees of Virgo. The tool shows this on each node card.

Why does the Node move backward?

Because the Moon's orbit slowly rotates in the opposite direction to the planets, due to the Sun's pull. As a result, the node's position, on average, recedes about 19.3 degrees a year instead of advancing.

Are the nodes linked to eclipses?

Yes. Eclipses only happen when the new or full Moon is near a node. This tool does not list eclipses, but the node sign shows in which part of the zodiac eclipses occur in each period of about 18 months.
