Compatibility between two signs, in this tool, does not come from a fixed table of 144 memorized pairs: it is calculated from three clear rules, the relationship between elements, the angular distance between signs (which defines an aspect), and whether qualities and polarities align or clash.
Both are fire (a "same" relation, base 82) 4 signs apart (trine, +8); different qualities (cardinal and fixed) add another 4 points for not competing over the same role.
Fire and water form the "challenging" relation (base 52) 3 signs apart (square, -6); the shared cardinal quality between both subtracts another 6 points, for competing over who leads.
The same pattern from Aries and Leo repeats: same element (earth), 4 signs apart (trine) and different qualities (fixed and mutable) land on the same 94 score, the typical ceiling for harmonious pairs.
From each sign's element and modality, its polarity and the aspect formed by the distance between them on the zodiac. Elements that reinforce each other (fire-air, earth-water) and harmonious aspects (trine, sextile) raise the score; squares and quincunxes weigh more on the friction side.

Because quality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) is weighed separately from element: when both signs share the same quality, the calculation deducts 6 points, for competing over the same kind of role, initiating, sustaining or adapting, even with the element working in their favor.
