Each tile can take part in at most one merge per move. For example, a row of four "2" tiles becomes two "4" tiles in that same move, and those two freshly created "4" tiles do not merge again with each other in that same move, even though they end up side by side. They can only merge again on a later move.

The classic slide-and-merge puzzle
2048 is the puzzle where you slide the number tiles on a 4x4 board up, down, left or right. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one with double the value. After any move that changes the board, a new tile (2 or 4) appears on an empty cell. The classic goal is to reach the 2048 tile, but the game does not stop there: you can keep going and chase 4096, 8192 and beyond, indefinitely, until no move is left. Your score climbs with every merge, and your best score stays saved in your browser.
Slide, merge, and don't run out of room
- On mobile, swipe across the board; on desktop, use the arrow keys.
- Matching tiles that touch in the direction you moved merge into one, worth double.
- Keep merging to grow your score, use "Undo" if a move backfires, and "New game" to start over.
