What dog breed are you? A personality quiz with 23 breeds, from the Golden Retriever to the Brazilian Caramel Mutt

Everybody knows someone who "looks just like" a dog: the friend who welcomes the whole gang like a Golden, the colleague who never lets a problem go like a Border Collie, the person who wants only the couch and a lap like a Pug. This quiz turns that hunch into a result. In 10 everyday scenarios, it measures seven traits (drive, sociability, independence, guard instinct, goofball streak, attachment and brainpower) and points, among 23 breeds popular in Brazil and the United States, to the one that looks most like you. The breeds include Labrador, Shih Tzu, German Shepherd, French Bulldog, Poodle, Dachshund (the wiener dog), Chihuahua, Husky, Rottweiler, Shiba Inu, Fila Brasileiro and Great Dane.

Among the results is the Brazilian Caramel Mutt, treated as a full result and not as "what was left". Caramel is not a breed: it is the coat color of a mixed-breed dog (SRD in Brazil, "no defined breed"), and all of Brazil recognizes the character. Each result brings a description, an epithet, the hard side, a motto, the perfect day, the kind of person it pairs with and the worst nightmare, plus three short facts about the breed (group, weight and life expectancy, per the American Kennel Club). At the end, the 7-axis radar shows how you spread across the traits, with a reading of each axis written for your band.

How the result is calculated and what this quiz is not

There are 10 questions per attempt: 7 multiple-choice scenarios, one drawn for each situation (free morning, at home, around people, under pressure, routine, challenges and affection) from a pool of 6 per situation, and 3 "distribute 10 points" dilemmas drawn from a pool of 6. Each option pulls one main axis and sometimes a secondary one, and none is the right answer: what is measured is your way of being. The match compares the shape of your 7-axis vector with that of each breed and, with less weight, the overall level of your answers. If you answer everything "in the middle", the result tends to be the Brazilian Caramel Mutt.

This is an entertainment quiz. The facts for each breed (group, weight, life expectancy and the temperament words) come from the American Kennel Club breed pages (akc.org/dog-breeds), with weights in pounds converted to kilograms and rounded. The Fila Brasileiro follows the FCI nomenclature and standard no. 225 (fci.be), and the information on the caramel mutt comes from National Geographic Brasil (Oct 2025). Each breed's vector is an editorial estimate, and every dog is an individual: no breed guarantees temperament. The quiz does not identify genetics and does not replace the guidance of a veterinarian or a trainer when choosing or caring for an animal.

All possible results

Caramel Mutt (Mixed Breed)

No pedigree, plenty of personality.

Caramel is not a breed: it is the coat color of a mixed-breed dog (in Brazil, SRD, "no defined breed"), and all of Brazil spots one from afar. Whoever gets this result tends to be the most adaptable person in the group, someone who does well in a small apartment or a big backyard, with kids or with grandparents, with a party or with silence. You are not extreme in anything, and that is exactly what makes you precious: you take the walk, the couch, new people and the routine when it gets tight. Every mutt is unique, because the mix of stories it comes from never repeats. The same goes for you, who fit no label and never needed a pedigree to be loved.

What to do with this result

Golden Retriever

The friend who warms up the room.

The Golden Retriever began in Scotland as a gundog that fetches game gently, and still works today as a guide dog and in rescue operations. Whoever gets this result is the friend everyone wants nearby: devoted, friendly and smart enough to know when you need company or quiet. You walk into a room and the temperature rises half a degree. You like people, pleasing others and caring, and believe almost every stranger is a friend in the making. Your risk is not coldness, it is the opposite: giving so much of yourself that you forget to ask for anything back. Learn to say no without feeling guilty.

What to do with this result

Labrador Retriever

Enthusiasm with a wagging tail.

The Labrador ranks second on the American Kennel Club popularity list, and anyone who lives with one knows why: active, outgoing and friendly, it has affection to spare. If this is your result, you are the person who says yes before hearing the end of the sentence. You switch to party mode with no effort, make friends in the supermarket line and think every day is a good day to leave the house. Your energy is contagious, but it needs a destination: without a walk, a sport or a project, the surplus of drive turns into mess. You are the type who eats fast, laughs loud and leaves a trail of smiling people behind you.

What to do with this result

Border Collie

The mind that never switches off.

The Border Collie was bred to herd sheep in the hills between Scotland and England, and the AKC describes it as affectionate, smart and energetic. If it is your result, you have a mind that needs work: a spreadsheet, a puzzle, a project, any problem worth the effort. Boredom is your true punishment. You learn fast, notice everything and grow restless when conversation slows. In return, you deliver results like few others and take what you promise seriously. The watch-out is learning to stop: those who never rest the mind end up using the energy to organize other people's lives, even when nobody asked.

What to do with this result

Siberian Husky

Freedom with a howl for an opening.

Bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull sleds over long distances, the Husky is, according to the AKC, mischievous, outgoing and loyal. Your result says you are free: you love people, but do not obey just because you were told to, and you have the drive to cross the day without asking permission. You have opinions, do things your way and love an adventure without a script. Plenty of people are charmed by that independence and as many tire of it, because you vanish, return and tell a story nobody saw coming. Your humor is theatrical, sometimes dramatic. When you feel too hemmed in, you make noise, literally or not, and escape can be your favorite answer.

What to do with this result

German Shepherd

The confidence of someone who already knows what to do.

The AKC calls the German Shepherd dogkind's finest all-purpose worker, and describes the temperament as confident, courageous and smart. If that is what you got, people count on you in a crisis: you look at the scene, understand what must be done and act firmly, without fuss. You have a sense of duty, are loyal to your group and take the protection of those under your care seriously. You learn fast and like having a clear role. Beneath the serious posture is an affectionate person who shows up only for those who earned trust. Be careful not to carry everyone's weight alone.

What to do with this result

Pug

Small, theatrical and in love with laps.

They say the Pug was a companion to Chinese emperors, and the AKC describes it as loving, charming and mischievous. Whoever gets this result loves being together: your pace is that of someone who chooses the couch, the show and the favorite person. You make people laugh without effort, have expressions worth a whole conversation and turn any dull moment into a show. Your energy is that of someone who likes little movement and a lot of affection, and your greatest joy is seeing someone laugh because of you. You are dramatic when you want attention and sweet when you get it. The challenge is looking after your own body, because laziness and too many treats send the bill.

What to do with this result

French Bulldog

Portable good humor in apartment size.

The French Bulldog sits first among the AKC's most popular breeds, and the temperament the organization highlights is playful, smart and adaptable. That is how you work: you enter any environment without drama, settle into the space you have and turn the place into a small party. You like people, love being the center of attention without asking for it out loud, and take a break when the conversation heats up. You prefer comfort to a marathon, and every outing is a chance to make friends. People who live with you know the answer to boredom is always a joke, a grimace or a comedy scene improvised on the rug.

What to do with this result

Shih Tzu

Royalty that still asks for a lap.

Shih Tzu means "lion dog" in Chinese, and the AKC describes it as affectionate, playful and outgoing. Whoever gets this result has a calm elegance: you like being well treated, but never lose tenderness. You are the one who befriends everybody in the building, asks for little and gives plenty, and sees each visit as a chance for affection. Your pace is gentle, no marathons, and your company is one of the best gifts anyone can have. If you have a weakness, it is a gentle vanity: you like to look presentable and receive compliments, and you sulk a little when the routine changes without warning.

What to do with this result

Poodle

Elegance with brains to spare.

The AKC sums up the Poodle as active, proud and very smart, and the list of things the breed learns easily is long. If it was your result, you have the rare gift of being sophisticated without being snobbish: you learn fast, notice everything and make your own look seem natural. You like good conversation, a new trick and being recognized for your wit. You can be sensitive to criticism, because pride is always watching. Your humor is subtle, your curiosity is large and you nearly always have an idea better than the first one on the table. No monotony: you thrive when life has nuance.

What to do with this result

Dachshund (Wiener Dog)

A long body, an even longer conviction.

Dachshund is the German word for "badger dog", because the breed was created to go into burrows, and the AKC describes it as spunky, friendly and curious. Whoever gets this result has a personality that outgrows its size: formed opinions, plenty of courage and a bark announcing every novelty. You are loyal to a few people and very firm about what you consider right, and when you decide, nobody changes your mind. You choose carefully whom to trust, guard your territory and show affection discreetly. Your weak point is stubbornness: when you dig in, you become a wall, and pushing only hardens the position.

What to do with this result

Beagle

A sharp nose and an open heart.

The Beagle is a scent hound that follows its nose, and the AKC describes it as friendly, curious and merry. If it was your result, you are the person who sniffs out the new before everyone: the new restaurant, the sale, the topic about to blow up. You follow your own curiosity, sometimes without noticing you went too far, and then return smiling as if nothing happened. You like company, food and a good story. Your joy is contagious, and the group likes having you around precisely because you treat life as a fun investigation. The care is with distraction: when the nose goes, everything else comes later.

What to do with this result

Chihuahua

The smallest dog with the biggest attitude.

One of the smallest breeds in the world, the Chihuahua carries the name of the Mexican state it came from. The AKC describes it as charming, graceful and sassy, and that is how you show up: small in presence, huge in personality. You have an intense loyalty to one or two people and a polite suspicion of everyone else. You bark to warn, face down anything bigger and feel safe near the ones you love. Whoever earns your affection gains a devoted partner, and whoever tries to force intimacy gets a disapproving look. Your challenge is learning that not every stranger is a threat, and that breathing is also a way of protecting yourself.

What to do with this result

Rottweiler

A soft-hearted guardian.

The AKC defines the Rottweiler as loving, a confident guardian and loyal, and the combination is exactly what matters here: protective by nature, yet gentle with those in your circle. Whoever gets this result inspires respect without raising their voice. You look after the family, watch who arrives, know the limits of what you accept and protect your people with calm. Few imagine that behind the firm posture is someone who likes staying close and getting a pat at the end of the day. Your strength is being calm when everyone else is agitated. Your challenge is avoiding rigidity: not every situation calls for a guard on duty.

What to do with this result

Pomeranian

A fluffball with delusions of grandeur.

Known in Brazil as Lulu da Pomerânia (German Spitz, miniature), the Pomeranian is, according to the AKC, inquisitive, bold and lively, and takes that very seriously. If it was your result, you have a presence that fills a whole room: you talk loud, have opinions and feel it is your duty to alert the group to everything happening. You love attention, play with friends and dramatize a trivial situation like someone narrating a movie premiere. Your energy belongs to someone who never sits still, curiosity at full blast. Beneath the spectacle is an affectionate person who feels safer near people and just wants to be noticed and loved.

What to do with this result

Yorkshire Terrier

Small outside, intense inside.

The Yorkie is a pocket terrier that the AKC describes as affectionate, sprightly and tomboyish. Whoever gets this result has the blend of sweetness and attitude: you are tender with those you love and brave with whatever challenges you. You like being in the middle of the action, following your favorite person all through the house and proving that size does not define strength. Your energy is big for the body you have, and your humor is mischievous. You are the loyal friend who defends your own with tooth and nail and who laughs at yourself. Take care not to be so wired that nobody keeps up: now and then, slowing down is the courage most missing.

What to do with this result

Greyhound

Speed to spare and couch-level calm.

The Greyhound is one of the fastest dogs in the world, but the AKC describes it as gentle, independent and noble, and the calm side dominates at home. If it was your result, you are one of those people who seem reserved until someone discovers the tenderness underneath. You prefer quiet places, love comfort, watch more than you talk and have sensitivity to the emotional weather of the room. On rare occasions you unleash a burst of energy and surprise everyone. No drama, no fuss, no demands: you are one of those friends who sit quietly in a corner and, when you need to be noticed, a look and an elegant gesture are enough for the whole room to understand.

What to do with this result

Boxer

A heavyweight goofball.

The Boxer is, for the AKC, bright, fun-loving and active, and the set sums up the person who gets this result. You have an athlete's body and heart, energy for the most tiring games and a sense of protection that shows up without alarm. You love kids, love mess and love showing that behind the strong look there is a goofball who laughs at their own blunders. Your enthusiasm is whole: when you play, you really play; when you protect, you really protect. The challenge is intensity. Your joy sometimes runs people over without meaning to, and love shown in jumps and strong hugs asks for some gentleness toward those with less stamina.

What to do with this result

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Short legs, plenty of leadership.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was bred in Wales to drive cattle, and the AKC describes it as affectionate, smart and alert. That is what your result reveals: a quick mind in a friendly package, with initiative to spare and a pinch of bossiness. You notice everything, take on the role of organizer for the gang without realizing it and play with the seriousness of someone who knows exactly what they are doing. When people scatter, you gather them. When the pace drops, you lift it. No matter how big the world is: you believe that with the right attitude, any obstacle is just one more task to be herded toward the right destination.

What to do with this result

Doberman Pinscher

Alert elegance, total loyalty.

The AKC describes the Doberman Pinscher as alert, loyal and fearless, and the set matches whoever gets this result: a person of imposing presence, electric energy and a devotion that accepts no middle ground. You sense the environment before others, protect those you love without blinking and make commitment an absolute priority. Beneath the serious bearing is an affectionate person who likes staying close and being included in everything. You train with discipline, learn fast and take the role of protecting seriously. The challenge is releasing tension: not every shadow is a threat, and real rest is part of the job, not a weakness.

What to do with this result

Shiba Inu

A cat's pride, a dog's heart.

Originally from Japan, where it hunted small game in the mountains, the Shiba Inu is, for the AKC, alert, active and attentive. If it was your result, you are a person of few words and much observation, who asks neither opinion nor permission to live in your own way. You take care of your routine with polish, appreciate cleanliness and order and love the freedom to decide. You do not show affection in public and prefer a discreet pat to a scene. Whoever cultivates a friendship with you finds deep loyalty behind the independent pose. The hard part is stubbornness: you do not accept an order without argument and, when you want to leave, nobody holds you.

What to do with this result

Fila Brasileiro

The Brazilian guardian, firm and reserved.

The Fila Brasileiro is one of the breeds created in Brazil that the FCI recognizes, under standard no. 225, and the standard itself describes it as a watch dog. If it was your result, you have a reputation for being serious and discreet, but those who live with you notice a loyalty that is not negotiable. You are very reserved with strangers, attentive to who approaches and careful with territory and family. You give safety to those nearby and need no noise to command respect. Your challenge is lowering the guard at the right moment: not every stranger is a risk, and some of the best friendships start through the door you keep shut.

What to do with this result

Great Dane

A giant lap-seeker with an enormous heart.

Despite what the name suggests, the Great Dane is a German breed, and the AKC describes it as friendly, patient and dependable. Whoever gets this result is the gentle giant of the gang: calm, sociable and always ready to offer a shoulder and a hug. You move with delicacy, like someone who knows their own size, and give tranquility to those around. You like constant company, roomy spaces and long naps after a moderate walk. You give love in large quantity and expect the same back. Your delicate point is sensitivity: despite a sturdy bearing, you get hurt easily and take a while to recover.

Frequently asked questions

No. The quiz compares your way of acting with each breed's typical temperament, playfully. It does no DNA reading and does not say where you come from. Think of the result as a personality game, like a good-humored horoscope.
