ACH or wire routing number, which to use
Plenty of people copy the number from the foot of a check and use it for any transfer. Sometimes it works, sometimes the bank sends it back. This page explains why, what the Federal Reserve publishes for each service and how to lower the risk of sending to a wrong number.
The validator would catch the slip before the bank returns the payment.
Spreadsheets often eat the zero of prefixes 01 to 09. Store it as text.
Passing the checksum is not enough. The prefix must also fall in the 00-12, 21-32, 61-72 or 80 ranges.
Multiply the 9 digits by the weights 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1 and add them up: the number is valid when the total is a multiple of 10. To find the ninth digit, add only the first 8 products and take 10 minus the remainder after dividing by 10 (0 if the remainder is 0). In 111000025 the first 8 products add up to 3+7+1+0+0+0+0+14 = 25, 5 short of 30, so the ninth digit is 5.
It depends on the bank. Some use the same number, others have a separate wire number. The reliable information is in the bank's own transfer instructions, not the foot of the check.
There is no IBAN in the US. American accounts are identified by the routing number plus the account number, and transfers from abroad usually add the bank's SWIFT code.
The checksum only rules out typing mistakes. A number can be well formed and still belong to another institution, or to a participant that does not receive that kind of transfer. The Fed directory and the bank's own instructions confirm which number works for ACH and which for wires.
