The 3-4-5 triangle
- Input
- A(0, 0), B(3, 4)
- Expected output
- d = 5
Exact root, no radical.
distance between two points calculator
Type A and B in the Two points tab: the calculator returns the exact and decimal distance, the midpoint, the slope and the angle of the segment, and draws the right triangle whose legs are the x and y differences.
Exact root, no radical.
√20 = √(4 · 5).
Legs 6 and 4: √52 = 2√13.
Legs 1 and 1.
x₁ = x₂.
Use d = √((x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁)²), which is the Pythagorean theorem applied to the coordinate differences. Between A(1, 2) and B(5, 4): d = √(4² + 2²) = √20 = 2√5 ≈ 4.4721. The calculator simplifies the radical by pulling perfect squares out of the root (20 = 4 · 5) and shows the decimal next to it.
No. The square root of a sum of squares is always zero or more, and it equals zero only when both points are the same point. The order of A and B does not matter either.
Add the z difference: d = √((x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁)² + (z₂ - z₁)²). This calculator works in the plane; for space, use the vector calculator: type the vector B - A and read its magnitude.
To divide AB in the ratio m:n starting from A, use P = A + (m/(m + n)) · (B - A). The midpoint is the case m = n. Then check the result by typing A, P and B in the Triangle tab: the determinant must come out zero.
