Fractional slope
- Input
- A(1, 2), B(5, 4)
- Expected output
- x - 2y + 3 = 0; y = (1/2)x + 3/2
m = 1/2, α ≈ 26.5651°.
equation of a line through two points
In the Line equation tab, keep the Two points option selected and enter A and B. The cards give the four forms of the equation, where the line crosses each axis and the direction vector, with a graph of the line and its intercepts.
m = 1/2, α ≈ 26.5651°.
n = 1 is where it crosses the y-axis.
m undefined, α = 90°.
m = 0, α = 0°.
m = -1, α = 135°.
Crosses the axes at 1 and 2.
Use d = √((x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁)²), which is the Pythagorean theorem applied to the coordinate differences. Between A(1, 2) and B(5, 4): d = √(4² + 2²) = √20 = 2√5 ≈ 4.4721. The calculator simplifies the radical by pulling perfect squares out of the root (20 = 4 · 5) and shows the decimal next to it.
Use the one the question asks for. If it does not say, the standard form (ax + by + c = 0) is the safest because it exists for every line, vertical ones included. The slope-intercept form is good for reading m and n and for sketching.
Multiplying the whole equation by a nonzero constant describes the same line. 2x - 4y + 6 = 0 and x - 2y + 3 = 0 are equal. Compare coefficients after dividing by their greatest common divisor, or check that both points satisfy your equation.
Substitute its coordinates into the standard form: if ax + by + c comes out zero, the point is on the line. Another option is to type the three points in the Triangle tab and see whether the determinant is zero.
