Sun on the Midheaven
- Input
- Sol, MC
- Expected output
- 83,4° O
A vertical straight line along the 83.4 degrees west meridian; the Sun IC sits at 96.6 degrees east.
how to read astrocartography lines
On the tool map, every body draws four lines: two vertical straight lines (MC and IC) and two curves (ASC and DSC). Hover or tap a point to see the nearest line and the surrounding cities, and use the angle buttons to show one type at a time.
A vertical straight line along the 83.4 degrees west meridian; the Sun IC sits at 96.6 degrees east.
Almost on the Greenwich meridian; the Moon IC sits at 179.7 degrees east.
Sun declination of 19.4 degrees north: the curves exist between 70.6 degrees south and 70.6 degrees north.
New York is at 74.0 degrees west, 9.4 degrees of longitude from the line, which at that latitude is about 790 km.
It is an astrological technique that shows on a world map where each body of your natal chart stood at an angle (rising, setting, overhead or at the lowest point) at the moment you were born. It was developed by astrologers between about 1930 and 1960 and popularized by Jim Lewis in the 1970s and 1980s. Each body gives four lines, so the Sun to Pluto plus the North Node make 44 lines.
The moment a body culminates depends only on longitude, since local sidereal time decides it, so the MC is a meridian. Rising and setting also depend on latitude, through the tilt of the horizon against the celestial equator, and that produces the curve.
In the tool there are 44: 11 bodies (the Sun to Pluto plus the North Node) times 4 angles. Use the body and angle buttons to cut the number down, and the Love, Career, Home or Challenging shortcut to see just one slice.
There is no single rule. The tool offers radii of 150, 300 and 500 km, and the shorter the distance the stronger the symbolic reading. Many astrologers use similar bands, but the choice is convention with no experimental basis.
The exact time is essential here: the rising sign changes every two hours on average.
Without a birth date and time, the map shows the lines of the sky at this moment. The exact time is what positions the lines.
