Is the circumference method as accurate as DEXA or bioimpedance?
They are different categories: DEXA and other imaging methods measure tissue directly, while the circumference formula estimates a percentage from a statistical equation over neck, waist, hip and height, without measuring fat directly. It is a population-level estimate, not a clinical exam, and an accurate body composition assessment should come from a health professional.
Why does the women formula use hip circumference and the men one does not?
Because the original 1984 equation was fitted by statistical regression separately for each sex, and hip entered as a relevant variable only in the female fit; the male equation ended up defined with just neck, waist and height.
What happens if my waist is smaller than my neck?
The formula cannot compute a result: for men, it needs waist greater than neck, and for women, waist plus hip greater than neck, because the logarithm of zero or a negative number is not mathematically defined. In those cases the calculator rejects the measurement combination instead of returning an invalid result.
Does this body fat percentage replace a medical evaluation?
No. It is a population-level estimate based on circumferences, useful for tracking a trend over time, but it does not replace a diagnosis, a body composition exam or guidance from a health professional for individual decisions.
