This tool estimates a reference weight for adults from height and the sex used by the formula, comparing four classic equations: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. They all share the same logic, a base weight for the first five feet of height (60 inches) plus a fixed increment for each inch above that, so they convert height in centimetres to inches internally. Because each equation uses different coefficients, the tool shows all four results, the average and the range (minimum and maximum) to make clear how much they disagree. These formulas were created decades ago for drug dosing and population studies, not as a definition of health or appearance. They ignore muscle mass, bone structure, age, ethnicity and clinical history, so they work as a historical reference, not as a mandatory target. For real goals, use BMI, waist, body composition and professional assessment.
Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi start from the same shape: they set a base weight for a person of 5 ft (60 inches) and add a fixed amount for each inch of height above that. The tool converts your height in centimetres to inches, works out the excess above 60 inches and applies each author's coefficients.
What changes from one equation to another is the base weight and the increment per inch, plus separate coefficients for the male and female sexes. That is why the four numbers rarely match, and the average only summarises the set, it is not an individual recommendation.
Example 1, a man of 1.80 m: that is about 10.9 inches above 5 ft. The formulas return roughly 75 kg (Devine), 73 kg (Robinson), 72 kg (Miller) and 77 kg (Hamwi), with an average near 74 kg and a range of 72 to 77 kg.
Example 2, a woman of 1.65 m: about 5 inches above the base. The results land around 57 kg (Devine), 57 kg (Robinson), 60 kg (Miller) and 56 kg (Hamwi), with an average near 58 kg and a range of 56 to 60 kg. Note that the gap between the lowest and highest formula reaches several kilograms, that is the method's uncertainty, not an exact target.
Two people with the same height can have different muscle mass, bone structure, age and fat distribution. Formulas that use only height and a binary sex coefficient do not capture that variation and say nothing about metabolic health.
For clinical goals, modern methods assess weight trajectory, lab work, body composition, habits and psychological context. Use this result as a starting point for a conversation with a professional, never as a diagnosis or rigid target.
