The Chinese zodiac (生肖, shēngxiào) organizes time into a cycle of 12 animals, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig, each ruling one year. Layered on top is the cycle of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), which alternates every two years between yin and yang polarity. The combination of 12 animals with 5 elements only repeats every 60 years: this is the famous sexagenary cycle, which is why there is, for example, a Wood Dragon or a Metal Snake. Unlike the Western horoscope, which looks at the Sun's position on the birth date and splits the year into 12 signs, the Chinese horoscope starts from the birth year, and from the lunar year, not the civil one. Because Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20, someone born early in the year still belongs to the previous year's animal. This tool makes that adjustment automatically and shows your animal's personality, the flavor of the element, the polarity, your best matches and your lucky numbers and colors.
