The Chinese zodiac combines a 12-animal cycle with a 5-element cycle, forming 60 distinct combinations before repeating. The detail that causes the most confusion is that Chinese New Year does not fall on January 1: anyone born in January or early February may belong to the previous year's animal.
Chinese New Year 2025 only arrived on January 29, so this date still counts as year 2024 on the Chinese calendar, even though it is already 2025 on the Gregorian one.
Only 12 days separate these two examples, but crossing the January 29 date changes the animal entirely, from Dragon to Snake, showing why the exact turnover date matters more than the calendar year.
The year's last digit sets the element in pairs: 0 and 1 are metal, 2 and 3 are water, 4 and 5 are wood, 6 and 7 are fire, 8 and 9 are earth; each element lasts exactly 2 consecutive years before moving to the next.

Because Chinese New Year does not fall on January 1, it varies between January 21 and February 20 each year; if you were born in that window, before that year's exact turnover date, your animal is still the previous year's, not the calendar year you were born in.
Because it combines two smaller cycles running at the same time: 12 animals and 10 element-polarity combinations (5 elements × yin/yang); the smallest number of years in which both cycles line back up at the same point is the least common multiple of 12 and 10, which is 60.
