All nine permission bits.
chmod 777 what does it do
Type 777 in the calculator and watch the danger warning: all nine bits are on. Below are the most common causes of the error that leads to this command and the fixes that solve it without opening everything.
All nine permission bits.
Group writes and new files inherit the folder group.
Everyone writes; sticky protects each user files.
First step of any fix.
Only the owner keeps write.
The 7 gives the owner read, write and execute (4+2+1). Each 5 gives group and others read and execute (4+1), without write. On files it is the mode of programs and scripts; on directories it lets everyone list and enter, but only the owner create and delete items. ls -l shows rwxr-xr-x.
It often hides the error, but for the wrong reason. It opens everything to everyone instead of granting access to whoever needs it. Check owner and group with ls -l and adjust with chown or chgrp.
The leading 1 turns on the sticky bit. On a directory, with it, only the file owner, the folder owner and root can delete or rename items. With plain 777, any user can delete other users files.
It is a clear risk, because an uploaded executable could be changed by any process. Use 775 with the web server group and keep code files out of it.
Accepts rwxr-xr-x, -rwxr-xr-x or clauses such as u=rwx,g=rx,o=.
644: regular file. The owner reads and writes, everyone else only reads.
chmod 644 arquivochmod u=rw,g=r,o=r arquivochmod -R 644 pasta/find . -type f -exec chmod 644 {} +find . -type d -exec chmod 644 {} +install -m 644 origem destinomode: '0644'RUN chmod 644 /caminho/arquivoCOPY --chmod=644 origem destinogit update-index --chmod=-x arquivoFollows POSIX and GNU chmod (tested on coreutils 9.4). BSD, macOS, ACLs and mounts such as FAT or NTFS may behave differently.
