umask 022 meaning
In the umask tab, type 022 and see the mode of new files and directories, with the binary math. The second half of the tab goes the other way: you enter the wanted mode and it returns the umask.
New files and directories.
Others get no access.
Everything private to the owner.
666 with 033 gives 644, not 633.
The smallest is 026; 027 is the usual one and leaves folders at 750.
The 7 gives the owner read, write and execute (4+2+1). Each 5 gives group and others read and execute (4+1), without write. On files it is the mode of programs and scripts; on directories it lets everyone list and enter, but only the owner create and delete items. ls -l shows rwxr-xr-x.
They are, the leading zero only marks octal. The fourth digit, when used, handles the special bits and almost nobody changes it.
Because the process had umask 022 and asked for 666. For another mode, change the umask before creating the file or run chmod afterwards. The umask tab of the calculator shows the result for any value.
In a systemd unit use UMask=0027. In a container, the umask comes from the main process: set it in the entrypoint script with umask 027 before exec, because RUN umask only holds inside that layer.
Accepts rwxr-xr-x, -rwxr-xr-x or clauses such as u=rwx,g=rx,o=.
644: regular file. The owner reads and writes, everyone else only reads.
