Looking up a CNPJ helps identify basic registry information about a Brazilian company, such as legal name, status, address and economic activity. But those fields need to be interpreted carefully: available data does not automatically guarantee full regularity, business reputation or lack of risk. The tool queries public databases in real time (BrasilAPI / Minha Receita, which mirror the Receita Federal registry) and returns the fields available at that moment. This section explains the structure of the CNPJ number itself, what each registry status means, the difference between trade name and legal name and, importantly, how far a public lookup goes and where it stops.
A CNPJ has 14 digits, usually written as 00.000.000/0001-00, and each block has a role. The first 8 form the root (or base): they identify the company as an entity. The next 4 indicate the establishment order, 0001 is the headquarters, and 0002, 0003 and so on are the branches. The last 2 are check digits, calculated from the previous ones to catch typing errors.
That explains why companies with several units have almost identical CNPJs, differing only in the order block: they share the same root. Validating the check digits confirms only that the number is well-formed, not that the company exists or is active; that is what the registry lookup tells you.
The registry status is the most-consulted field, and its values are worth understanding. "Active" indicates a regular registry in that respect. "Baixada" (closed) means the company was wound up. "Suspensa" (suspended) and "Inapta" (unfit) point to pending issues or irregularities that restrict the registry, and "Nula" (null) indicates an annulled record.
It is important not to confuse registry status with the health of the business: an "active" company may have debts, lawsuits or a poor reputation, and the field says nothing about that. The status describes the registry condition at the Receita, not commercial trustworthiness. For weighty decisions, it is only one of the signals to check.
The data comes from public databases that mirror the Receita Federal registry (via BrasilAPI / Minha Receita). Being public, it covers registry information, legal name, trade name, address, CNAE (the declared economic activity), opening date and, when available, the QSA (partners and administrators). The exact scope depends on the source and on what is filled in at the time.
What the lookup is not: a credit analysis, a tax-clearance certificate or a due diligence. It does not assess reputation, history, lawsuits or financial capacity. For those, there are specific sources (certificates, protests, credit analysis). Treat the result as a registry snapshot, and note the date, since the data changes over time.
