There is no single water-per-day number: there is a fixed reference by sex, age and life stage, and a body-weight estimate that adjusts for physical activity and climate. This page separates the two calculations and shows where each one applies.
The daily total the calculator uses is the weight-based base, 2275 ml; the 3700 ml reference appears as the official comparison value, but it is not added, because the two calculations answer different questions.
Pregnancy swaps the entire reference for 3.0 liters, the fixed value for that stage, instead of adding an increment on top of the 2.7 liters used for a non-pregnant adult woman.
The 60 minutes of heavy sweat add two 500 ml blocks (1000 ml total), and hot climate adds a further flat 350 ml on top, unrelated to the duration of the activity.
Because practical hydration varies meaningfully with body size. Without weight, the tool is a good benchmark; with weight, it becomes more personalized.
Because the life stage (pregnancy or lactation) replaces the age-and-sex reference with its own value: 3.0 liters during pregnancy and 3.8 liters during lactation, versus 2.7 liters for an adult woman outside those stages.
The official references do not use a fixed 2-liter number: they are 3.7 liters for adult men and 2.7 liters for adult women, and that total includes water from food, not just direct drinking, so comparing against a generic 2-liter rule skips both variables.
The milliliters-per-kilogram value stops using the fixed 32.5 ml/kg default and starts moving within the 30 to 35 ml/kg range, closer to the ceiling the higher the estimated lean mass proportion is relative to total weight.
No: the adjustment uses a fixed block per chosen sweat level (light, moderate or heavy) multiplied by the reported minutes, without measuring actual fluid loss, so it is a population-level estimate, and individual guidance on fluid replacement during exercise should come from a health professional.

The tool keeps official DRI AI visible as a population reference and calculates a personalized weight-based estimate. If body-fat percentage is provided, the ml/kg factor is nudged within the 30–35 ml/kg band so that body composition also affects the estimate.
Personalized base = weight × factor between 30 and 35 ml/kg; the factor rises as estimated lean-mass proportion rises. Sweat/activity and heat are then added. Official DRI AI remains visible for comparison.
