FGTS (Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço) is a mandatory fund for Brazilian CLT workers. Employers deposit 8% of the gross salary monthly into an individual account managed by Caixa Econômica Federal, and this amount is not discounted from the salary, it is paid on top of the worker's pay. The balance earns TR (Referential Rate) plus 3% per year. Workers can access the funds in specific situations: dismissal without cause, retirement, first home purchase, serious illness, and others. In a dismissal without cause the employer also pays a 40% fine on the accumulated balance, and this tool sums the 8% deposits to give a quick estimate of the balance and that fine.
The FGTS shown here is the sum of the deposits: every month the employer contributes 8% of the gross salary to the linked account at Caixa, and the tool multiplies that deposit by the number of months you enter. Because this contribution is the employer's obligation, it is paid on top of your pay and never taken out of your salary.
The severance fine is computed as 40% of the total deposited, the percentage owed in a dismissal without cause. This estimate focuses on the deposits themselves and does not project the TR + 3% per year that Caixa credits on the balance, so the real balance tends to be somewhat higher than the figure shown.
Illustrative example, a gross salary of R$ 3,000: the monthly deposit is 8%, i.e. R$ 240. Over 20 months of employment the deposits add up to about R$ 4,800 (illustrative values, before any yield). In a dismissal without cause, the 40% fine on that balance would be roughly R$ 1,920, bringing the total released to around R$ 6,720.
Notice that doubling the time on the job roughly doubles the accumulated balance, because deposits are linear in this estimate. The real figure will be a bit higher, since Caixa credits TR + 3% per year on what is already deposited, a return this tool does not model.
The standard rate is 8%, but apprenticeship contracts contribute 2%. The balance can be withdrawn only in situations set by law, dismissal without cause, retirement, first home purchase, serious illness, among others, and choosing the anniversary withdrawal (saque-aniversário) means giving up the 40% fine and the full withdrawal in a dismissal without cause.
Because this is an educational estimate that ignores yield and the exact date of each deposit, the value shown tends to sit below the real balance. For the official number, check your statement in the FGTS app or Caixa online banking; to plan a termination, confirm with HR or a labor attorney.
