GPA (Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of each letter grade's points by course credits: GPA = sum(points x credits) / sum(credits). The standard scale runs from 0 (F) to 4.0 (A or A+).
It is the American standard for measuring academic performance, where each letter grade (A to F) is worth a number of points from 0 to 4.0, and the final GPA is the average of those points weighted by each course credits.
Because courses with more credits represent more workload and more weight in the curriculum, so they should influence the final result more than a 1-credit course.
There is no universal number, each institution and program sets its own criteria, but a GPA above 3.5 is usually seen as strong and above 3.0 as solid in most US contexts.
