IBGE Municipality Code
Brazil has thousands of municipalities, and several of them share the exact same name across different states, which makes the IBGE's 7-digit code the only reliable way to identify a municipality without ambiguity. This page explains how that code is built and how the territorial division into regions and states fits into it, before you search for a municipality in the tool.
The first 2 digits, 35, are enough to know the municipality is in São Paulo before even decoding the rest of the code.
The state prefix alone already locates the state; it's the same logic used to group every São Paulo municipality under one filter.
A name-only search returns all five at once; only the 7-digit code or a state filter resolves which of the five was intended.
Type the municipality name in the search box. The list filters as you write, and opening a city's record shows the 7-digit IBGE code with a copy button. If you already have the code, type the 7 digits and the record opens directly.
This tool's dataset holds 5,571 municipalities registered in the IBGE's localities API, spread across the 26 states and the Federal District.
They identify the state: for example, 35 is São Paulo and 33 is Rio de Janeiro, so a municipality's state can be read straight off the first 2 digits of its 7-digit code.
Because no federal rule bans repeated names across different states; names drawn from saints or common geographic features, like Bom Jesus, end up repeating several times around the country, each occurrence with its own IBGE code.
5 major regions (Norte, Nordeste, Centro-Oeste, Sudeste, and Sul) and 27 states: the 26 states plus the Federal District, each with its own 2-digit code in the IBGE registry.
Every Brazilian municipality in one local dataset. Search by city name, by IBGE code, or filter by state and region.
