Anyone who needs a city's IBGE code is usually filling out an invoice, registering an address in an ERP, or matching statistical datasets, and wants the exact number, without ambiguity. This tool uses the official IBGE localities dataset, with every municipality in the country indexed locally. You search by city name, by the 7-digit code, or filter by state and region, and get the IBGE code, the state, the region, the mesoregion and the microregion of each municipality. The municipality code has 7 digits and starts with the 2 digits of its state, a logic that helps in validations and integrations. The content is informational and points to IBGE as the final reference: administrative reorganizations and the creation of new municipalities can change names and codes over time.
The IBGE code is a municipality's official numeric identifier. It has 7 digits, and the first 2 match the code of the state the municipality belongs to. So every municipality in Sao Paulo starts with 35, every one in Rio de Janeiro starts with 33, and so on. This structure lets you recognize the state just by looking at the start of the code, and validate the relationship between city and state.
A state has its own 2-digit code. The municipality code does not replace the state code: the two coexist, and the municipality code is what appears in records that must identify the city uniquely, without relying on the name (which repeats: there are dozens of towns named Bom Jesus and Santa Maria across the country).
The IBGE municipality code is used across many mandatory systems. On the Brazilian electronic invoice (NF-e and NFS-e), the issuer's and recipient's municipality is reported by this code, not by name. It also appears in address records in ERPs, in statistical and health datasets, in public accountability filings, and in tax integrations that must recognize the city with no room for spelling errors.
It is important not to confuse the IBGE code with the CEP. The IBGE code identifies a territorial unit (the whole city), while the CEP is a postal identifier that can vary from street to street. Both may sit in the same record, serving different purposes.
Brazil is organized into 26 states and the Federal District, grouped into 5 major regions: North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast and South. Within each state, IBGE groups municipalities into mesoregions (large areas with similar economic and social traits) and, within those, into microregions (smaller groups of neighboring municipalities). The tool shows these four layers for each city.
The country has more than 5,500 municipalities. The official figure sat at 5,570 for many years, and recent creations nudged that total up a little. The exact count of the dataset in use appears at the top of the screen, next to the date. A municipality and a district are not the same thing: a district is an internal subdivision of a municipality, not an autonomous unit with its own code in this dataset.
