Origin and meaning of 63 Brazilian names, with the source cited, how many people have the name in Brazil and its nicknames. When sources disagree, we say so and leave it blank.
Origin and sense only when it can be proven, with the source in view.
Name-meaning sites tend to mix etymology with personality and destiny. Here only what can be checked goes in: the source language, the elements that form the name, the literal sense, who has borne it and the source. Each name was compared across two open sources we read on 2 November 2026, the Dicionário de Nomes Próprios and Behind the Name. Of the 63 names, 36 have sources that agree (Rafael is "God heals", from Hebrew rafa plus El), 16 are probable, with a caveat we show (Lucas probably comes from Loukanos, "from Lucania", but may link to light) and 11 are left without a meaning because the sources diverge, such as Maria, Bruno and Gustavo. In those cases we explain the disagreement instead of picking a version. Next to the meaning you see how many people have the name in the 2010 IBGE Census, its real nicknames and links to the nickname and popularity pages for the same name. There is no personality forecast, lucky number or destiny here: that is not etymology.
How to use it
Type the name, read the sense and check the source.
Type a name (suggestions appear from the first letters) or tap a name in the list. The page opens with Rafael already shown.
Look at the confidence label: green when the sources agree, yellow when it is probable with a caveat, dashed when the origin is disputed and the meaning is left blank.
Use Copy text to take the meaning with its sources into a card or message, and the links to see the name's nicknames and popularity.

Nobody knows for sure, which is why we leave the meaning blank. The Hebrew form is Miryam, the name of the sister of Moses. Behind the Name lists theories such as "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness" and "wished-for child", or an Egyptian root tied to "beloved"; the Dicionário de Nomes Próprios gives "sovereign lady". These readings exclude one another.
Raphael is the name of an archangel in Hebrew tradition; he appears in the Book of Tobit, in which he accompanies Tobias disguised as a man. The Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal (born 1986) is a famous bearer.
