What is the difference between a Pix key and an ISPB?
The Pix key is the nickname that points to an account (a CPF, CNPJ, email, phone number, or a random key); the ISPB is the 8-digit number that identifies the financial institution that owns that account. When a Pix transfer runs, the system resolves the key until it finds the responsible participant's ISPB, then routes the transfer there.
Can any fintech become a Pix participant?
Only after clearing the Central Bank's authorization process and signing the Pix Adhesion Term. The institution then joins as a direct or indirect participant and receives its own ISPB, which then appears on the public list Bacen maintains.
Why do indirect participants exist if everyone processes Pix?
Keeping a direct settlement account at the Central Bank and the infrastructure to access the STR is expensive and comes with heavy regulatory demands. Smaller fintechs prefer hiring a direct participant to bridge that gap, which lowers the barrier to entry without removing the indirect institution from the official participant list.
What does the "Government Entity" modality mean on the Pix participant list?
It identifies public agencies that join the arrangement for the government's own operations, such as the National Treasury Secretariat, rather than commercial banks or fintechs. It is a separate category because the role these institutions play on Pix differs from that of a provider serving the general public.
