Almost everyone says "20 kg bar", but the number changes with the bar type, the collars and the unit system. This page gathers what IPF and IWF rules actually say and what is just maker convention.
(60 - 15) / 2 = 22.5. With 2.5 kg collars the bar with collars weighs 20 kg and 20 per side remain: one blue 20 kg plate.
In pounds, 135 lb is one 45 per side, 225 lb is two and 315 lb is three. In kg, 225 lb equals 102.06 kg.
Bar and collars total 25 kg; 115 kg remain, or 57.5 per side. Without collars it would be 60 per side.
Subtract the bar (and collars, if you use them) from the total weight and divide by two. For 100 kg with a 20 kg bar: (100 - 20) / 2 = 40 kg per side, which can be one 25 and one 15.
No. 20 kg is the standard men's Olympic bar, but there are 15 kg bars, technique bars, EZ bars and cheap gym bars outside spec. If precision matters, check the weight stamped on the bar or weigh it.
Only on competition plates. Many ordinary gym plates are all black. That is why the tool prints the number on each plate and uses color only as support.
Because 1 lb is 0.45359237 kg: 45 lb is 20.41 kg, about 400 grams more. The gap is small in a single lift, but it adds up when you compare total weights across the two systems.
Exact calculation: the fewest plates that reach the weight with your stock, preferring the heaviest next to the center. It is not the greedy method, so it still works when a plate is missing.
Always check the real bar and plates: gym bars and plates can vary and may not be calibrated. Secure plates with collars and use safety support on heavy lifts.
