resistor color code
The resistor color code uses 12 colors to encode digits, multiplier, tolerance and, on 6-band resistors, the temperature coefficient. The chart below (opening straight into the tool's Chart mode) lists the official value for every color, verified against IEC 60062.

Gold is never a digit, only multiplier (×0.1) or tolerance (±5%).
Start from the end opposite the tolerance band. The tolerance band is usually gold or silver (or visibly set apart from the rest with a wider gap), so it's always read last, and tells you which end to begin at.
Twelve: black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, grey, white, gold and silver. The first ten represent digits 0 through 9; gold and silver only ever appear as multiplier or tolerance.
Grey, at 1 ppm/K, the most thermally stable color on the chart. Black has the highest, at 250 ppm/K.
It's the convention for older 3-band resistors (2 digits + multiplier, with no tolerance band at all). In that case, a default ±20% tolerance is assumed.
