The question that brings most people here is simple: does my phone have a gyroscope? It usually comes up when an augmented reality game does not work, when a cardboard VR viewer fails to follow head movement, or when buying a second-hand device. The confusing part is that checking whether the API exists answers nothing. The motion event object exists in practically every browser, including on desktop machines with no sensors at all. What separates presence from absence is the content of the events, not their existence. The decisive field is rotation rate. Entry-level devices often ship an accelerometer but no gyroscope, and on those the rotation rate comes back with all three axes null while the accelerometer reports normally. That exact combination is what stops augmented reality apps from running: the device knows its tilt relative to gravity, but cannot follow fast turns or rotation about the vertical axis. The magnetometer is inferred from a different clue. An orientation described as absolute is one referenced to magnetic north, and only the magnetometer supplies that reference. Safari does not expose that field, but it does expose compass heading directly, which serves as the same clue. That is why the tool checks both. It is also worth reading the secure context row. Outside HTTPS the browser hides motion sensors entirely, and that is by far the most common reason someone concludes their device has no sensor when in fact it does.

Start the sensor and look at the gyroscope row. If it says Present and the numbers change when you rotate the device, the gyroscope exists and works. If it says Absent while the accelerometer says Present, the device has an accelerometer but no gyroscope, which is common on entry-level models and is why some games and VR viewers do not work.
