Modulus 11 with weights 9 to 2 over the first eight digits.
how to calculate the Brazilian state registration check digit
There is no single formula for the Inscricao Estadual: each state tax authority defines the length, weights and modulus, and SINTEGRA publishes one validation routine per state. Most use modulus 11, but the details change. The validator below is ready for you to paste a number and see which digit is wrong.
Modulus 11 with weights 9 to 2 over the first eight digits.
The second digit includes the first in the calculation.
The first digit is a modulus 10 over the digits of the products.
Each check digit is computed by multiplying the other digits by weights (for example 9 down to 2, left to right), adding them up and applying a modulus, almost always 11. In the most common rule, if the remainder of the division by 11 is 0 or 1 the digit is 0, otherwise it is 11 minus the remainder. Variations exist: AL and RN multiply the sum by 10, RR uses modulus 9, BA uses modulus 10 or 11 depending on the first or second digit, and MG adds up the digits of the products.
Most do, but not all. Roraima uses modulus 9, Bahia alternates between modulus 10 and 11, and Minas Gerais combines a digit sum with modulus 11. Even among the modulus 11 states, the weights and the handling of remainders 0 and 1 vary.
No. The digit only shows the number is consistent with the state rule, and it is meant to catch typing mistakes. Whether the registration exists and is active is confirmed by the state tax authority.
Not always. Several states use 9 digits with modulus 11, so the same number can be valid in more than one state. The validator has an option to test all states and list where the number passes.
