CSV to LaTeX table (booktabs, tabular, longtable)

Paste the CSV, open the LaTeX tab and choose the style. The code comes out with & % $ # _ and the other special characters already escaped, and with a comment at the top naming the packages for your preamble.

Escapes, styles and what each package does

LaTeX reserves ten characters: the backslash, ampersand, percent sign, dollar sign, hash, underscore, the two braces, the tilde and the caret. Seven of them are escaped with a backslash in front (\& \% \$ \# \_ and the braces). The backslash, tilde and caret do not accept that trick and become \textbackslash{}, \textasciitilde{} and \textasciicircum{}. A value such as "Error (%)" has to come out as "Error (\%)", otherwise the rest of the line turns into a comment and compilation fails. The tool does this in every cell and in the caption text too.
The booktabs style uses three horizontal rules, toprule, midrule and bottomrule, and no vertical lines, which is the typographic convention for scientific tables; the package is distributed on CTAN and needs \usepackage{booktabs}. The grid tabular style draws lines around every cell, as seen in course handouts, and needs no extra packages. Longtable splits the table across pages and repeats the header with endfirsthead and endhead, using the booktabs rules. Each style changes only the output text: the data stays the same.
When you give a caption or label, tabular and booktabs come out inside a table environment with centering and the caption above the table, the usual position in papers. The label is cleaned to hold only letters, digits and the symbols : _ . and hyphen, so "tab: sales" becomes "tab:-sales" and works in \ref. Numeric columns get the letter r, text gets l, and the alignment control in the edit toolbar changes that per column. Line breaks inside a cell become a space, since an l column cannot hold a break.

How do I convert an Excel table to Markdown?

Select the cells in Excel, copy with Ctrl+C and paste into the input box: the content arrives tab-separated and is recognized right away. Keep the Markdown tab active and click Copy. Numeric columns come out right-aligned (---: in the hyphen row) and text columns left-aligned, and you can force another alignment in the editing toolbar. Which style should I use in a scientific paper?

Booktabs, in most journals and templates, because of the three rules and no vertical lines. Check your institution template: if it requires borders, the grid tabular fits.

Can I paste a LaTeX table back in to edit it?

Yes. The input reads tabular, tabularx and longtable, undoes the escapes, drops rule commands and reads multicolumn, filling the merged space with empty cells.

Why does my table overflow the page width?

Columns l, c and r do not wrap text. Turn on the fit-to-text-width option, which wraps the tabular in resizebox and needs the graphicx package, or shorten the cell text.
