How do I convert an Excel table to Markdown?

Select the cells in Excel, copy with Ctrl+C and paste into the input box: the content arrives tab-separated and is recognized right away. Keep the Markdown tab active and click Copy. Numeric columns come out right-aligned (---: in the hyphen row) and text columns left-aligned, and you can force another alignment in the editing toolbar. Formulas arrive as the displayed value, not as the formula.

How do I convert CSV to a LaTeX table?

Paste the CSV, open the LaTeX tab and choose booktabs, which produces toprule, midrule and bottomrule and avoids vertical lines. Characters such as & % $ # _ are written with a backslash, so a value like 50% becomes 50\%. Copy the result and add the booktabs package with \usepackage to your preamble; the comment at the top of the output reminds you. For a caption and label, fill in the fields and the table comes out inside a table environment.

Is semicolon-separated CSV with a decimal comma read correctly?

Yes. Detection prefers tab, semicolon and pipe over comma precisely because of that kind of CSV. In SQL and JSON, numbers such as 1.234,56 are written as 1234.56, and the CSV output can convert the decimal separator back to a comma. If detection guesses wrong, pick the delimiter by hand in the Delimiter field.

How do I write the | character inside a Markdown table cell?

With a backslash before it: \|. The GitHub Flavored Markdown specification asks for that escape, even inside code spans. The converter does it for you and also turns line breaks into the br tag, since a Markdown table row cannot be broken. When you paste a Markdown table back in, the escape is undone.

Can I merge cells?

Accepted Answer

Markdown has no cell merging, and this tool does not create merged cells. It does read colspan and rowspan from an HTML table and multicolumn from a LaTeX table, filling the merged area with empty cells so the grid stays rectangular. If you need merging in the output, adjust the generated HTML or LaTeX after copying it.

How does SQL pick the column types?

Accepted Answer

Each column is examined as a whole. Integers only: INT, or BIGINT if any value exceeds 2,147,483,647. Integers and decimals: DECIMAL(p,s), where p adds the largest count of integer digits to the largest count of decimal digits and s is the decimal count; precision above 65 in MySQL falls back to DOUBLE. Valid YYYY-MM-DD dates become DATE, date and time become DATETIME or TIMESTAMP, true and false become BOOLEAN (INTEGER in SQLite). Any mix becomes text: VARCHAR(n) in MySQL up to 255 characters, TEXT above that and in the other dialects. You can turn inference off and use text everywhere.

Is there a row or column limit?

The tool imposes none. The grid renders only the visible rows, so scrolling 5,000 rows by 10 columns is smooth, and the tests convert that table to every format. The text preview shows the first 150,000 characters to keep the page light, but Copy and Download use the full result. The real limit is browser memory.

Can I convert the other way, from Markdown, HTML, JSON or LaTeX to something else?

Yes. The input accepts Markdown tables (with alignment), HTML (with thead, colspan and entities such as &), JSON (list of objects, list of lists, an object wrapping one list, and one object per line), ASCII and Unicode tables in MySQL, grid and psql styles, and LaTeX tabular, tabularx and longtable. Paste any of them and choose the output format, for example LaTeX to Markdown.

Is my data sent to a server?

Accepted Answer

No. Reading, editing and conversion run in the browser. The Copy link button builds a URL with the output format and, only when the input text is 1,500 characters or less, the text itself; that exposes the content to whoever receives the link, so be careful with sensitive data.

Why do 007 or a ZIP code with a leading zero stay text in SQL and JSON?

Accepted Answer

Because converting to a number would erase the zero. Values with a leading zero, with a plus sign (phone numbers such as +1415...) and integers with more than 15 digits in JSON are kept as text. Columns of ordinary numbers, such as 42, 3.14 or 1,234.56, become real numbers. If a column mixes numbers and text, the whole column becomes text so inconsistent values are never written.
