What is WPM and how is it measured?

This test measures your typing speed in words per minute, the standard metric used by practically every typing test out there. The industry convention treats a word as 5 characters, including spaces, so gross WPM is calculated by dividing the total number of typed characters by 5 and then by the elapsed time in minutes. Net WPM subtracts an error-per-minute penalty, which better reflects the real speed of correct typing. Accuracy is the percentage of characters typed correctly out of the total typed. The timer only starts counting the moment you press the first key, not when the page loads, so it does not penalize the time spent reading the text before you start.
