The engraving is usually on the floor pan or the frame rail, in addition to the plate on the dashboard or door pillar and the field on the paperwork. Check that the engraved number, the plate and the paperwork match before you buy.
They follow the 17-character format and the WMI works the same way, like 9C2 for Honda and 9C6 for Yamaha. What changes is that, for motorcycles, the model year may not be identifiable within a 30-year range under US rules.
