This tool shows which sign the Moon is in right now and lists, for any month between 1900 and 2100, every void-of-course period (also called the void Moon): from the last major aspect the Moon completes until it enters the next sign. Times come from the real positions of the Moon and the planets, computed in your browser with the Astronomy Engine library, and are shown in the time zone you choose, with that region's daylight saving time already applied. There is a list, a calendar and a sign table, and you can export the month to your calendar app.
The void-of-course Moon is the interval between the last major aspect the Moon completes and the moment it enters the next sign. The major aspects are the five angles described by Ptolemy: conjunction (0 degrees), sextile (60), square (90), trine (120) and opposition (180). While an aspect still lies ahead, the Moon is in course; after the last one, it travels alone until it changes sign.
The Moon goes around the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days and spends between 2 and 2.5 days in each sign, so there is a sign change roughly every two and a half days, and a void period tied to each one. The idea comes from traditional astrology (William Lilly, Christian Astrology, 1647): what is begun in that window is said to come to nothing. It is a convention of the tradition, with no scientific evidence of any effect. The sign shown is the tropical zodiac sign (12 parts of 30 degrees from the vernal point), not the constellation.
Every position comes from the Astronomy Engine library (true ecliptic longitude of date, for the Moon and the planets). The tool scans the period in 3-hour steps and finds the exact instant of each aspect and each sign change by bisection; results are shown to the minute. The aspect is measured by longitude, not by sign: a square that completes in the previous sign still counts as the last aspect if nothing else happens before the sign change.
When the Moon completes no aspect at all inside a sign, it is void for the entire stay, and the list marks that case with the Entire stay tag. In January 2026, in traditional mode, this happens with the Moon in Leo: from January 4, 13:43 UTC, to January 6, 16:57 UTC, that is more than 51 hours with no aspect. The times were checked against a published table for January and February 2026 and agree to within one minute.
In traditional mode the Moon is compared with the planets visible to the naked eye: Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Modern mode adds Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. More planets mean more aspects and therefore shorter periods. In January 2026 traditional mode adds up to about 185 void hours (close to 25% of the month); modern mode, about 57 hours (close to 8%).
A concrete case: on January 2, 2026 the Moon is void from 07:09 to 13:09 UTC (almost 6 hours) in traditional mode, after the square to Saturn, and only from 12:24 to 13:09 UTC (45 minutes) in modern mode, after the square to Neptune. There is no consensus among calendars, and this difference in planet sets is the most common reason times do not match between sites. The tool states which set is in use and lets you switch.
Followers of the tradition usually avoid signing contracts, launching projects and making important decisions in these periods, and keep the window for routine, rest and tasks already under way. Some schools admit exceptions, such as the Moon in signs where it is considered strong, but they vary and this tool applies none. Treat the result as an astrological convention, not as a forecast.
