The XML is read by a purpose-built parser that follows the well-formedness rules of XML 1.0: a single root element, tags closed in the right order, quoted and non-repeated attributes, comments without a double hyphen, no control characters, and references such as & or é written correctly. At the first error it stops and reports the line, the column and the reason, with the surrounding source and a caret under the exact spot; for a closing tag that does not match, it also tells you which line the element was opened on. Well-formed is not the same as valid: the tool does not check the file against an XSD. Formatting and minifying only touch the whitespace between elements; text, CDATA, comments, entities and mixed content (text with tags in the middle) come out exactly as they went in, and elements with xml:space="preserve" are left alone. Files that declare an encoding, such as ISO-8859-1, are decoded with the right one, and the result is always UTF-8 with the declaration adjusted. For safety, DOCTYPE, DTDs and declared entities are never loaded or expanded, which rules out entity-expansion attacks (billion laughs) and external file reads (XXE); the entity shows up as literal text and the page warns you. The limits are 15 MB, 1,000,000 nodes and 512 levels of nesting. The Tree tab has text search and a subset of XPath 1.0 (paths, //, @attribute, positions, last(), comparisons, contains, starts-with, not and count). When the file is a NF-e or NFC-e (root nfeProc, NFe or enviNFe), the NF-e tab shows the access key, issuer, recipient, items with taxes, totals, transport, billing, payment and authorization protocol. Field names follow the official schema from Brazil's NF-e Portal, layout 4.00; other versions are read but flagged as unverified, and anything not recognized stays in the tree.
