About this game

90 original mysteries, group deduction, right in your browser

Question Detective is a lateral-thinking party game for 3 or more players, in the style of story-and-deduction games where a single player knows the full solution to a strange case and the rest of the group has to reconstruct it by asking yes, no or irrelevant questions (the same genre popularized by card games like Black Stories, but here with 90 completely original cases written for this site, never reused from any other published game). Each round opens with a short, intriguing hook, read aloud to everyone: something that sounds impossible, paradoxical or alarming on its face. One player takes on the role of detective master and, through an explicit on-screen gate, reveals the full solution to themselves, hiding the device from the rest of the group before starting. From there, the other players investigate out loud, and whoever is holding the device just logs whether each question was answered yes, no or irrelevant, never typing the question's content itself. If the group gets stuck, they can request hints that reveal, one at a time, the case's key facts, from the most obvious to the most surprising. At the end, whether the group cracked it or gave up, the screen shows the full solution and highlights which key facts the group uncovered on their own and which ones slipped by. The 90 stories are split across 6 categories (mystery, supernatural, science fiction, historical, absurd and survival) and 3 difficulty levels, with a no-repeat deck that only reshuffles once every filtered case has already come up.

How to use

Set the table, pick a detective master, and start investigating

  1. Choose which categories and difficulty levels join the session, and decide whether to allow hints and the stopwatch in the house rules.
  2. One player taps "I'm the detective master, show the solution", reads the solution alone, and hides the screen before tapping "Begin investigation". The rest of the group reads the hook out loud and asks yes, no or irrelevant questions, which whoever holds the device only needs to log, never typing the question's content.
  3. When the group thinks they've cracked the case, tap "We solved it!"; if they get stuck, request hints or tap "Give up". The screen reveals the full solution and shows which key facts the group uncovered on their own and which ones were missed, before drawing the next case from the no-repeat deck.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The solution sits behind an explicit gate: a button clearly warns that only that round's detective master should be looking at the screen at that moment. After tapping it, that person reads the solution alone, hides the device from the rest of the group (for example, turning the screen away or stepping aside), and only then taps "Begin investigation" to unlock the question phase for everyone.
