The converter reads the file in your browser and keeps the sample rate of the original (the browser's default decoder resamples everything to the sound card's rate, and this tool avoids that), then writes the format you pick. MP3 uses the LAME encoder in JavaScript at a constant bitrate from 64 to 320 kbps, with an ID3v2.3 tag placed in front. WAV writes 16-bit or 24-bit PCM, or 32-bit float. FLAC is our own lossless encoder, which we test by decoding it back and comparing sample by sample and the MD5 signature. M4A (AAC) and OGG Opus use the browser's own encoder when there is one, so they may not appear on every system. Each bitrate shows its estimated size next to it: 128 kbps takes about 0.96 MB per minute, 192 kbps about 1.44 MB and 320 kbps about 2.4 MB, while a 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo WAV takes about 10.6 MB per minute. In the options you choose mono or stereo, convert the sample rate with a Blackman-windowed sinc filter, normalize the peak, trim silence at the start and end, and edit the tags. Several files go into a queue, are converted one at a time and come out together in a ZIP. Converting from one lossy format to another lossy format stacks degradation, and converting MP3 to WAV or FLAC does not bring back what the MP3 already threw away.
