Select IGP-M in the index selector and enter the period. This page example starts from R$ 1,000.00 in January 2020: by IGP-M it becomes R$ 1,638.63 in Oct 2026, against R$ 1,446.51 by IPCA.
Matches factor 1.2313835 from the Central Bank Citizen Calculator.
2021 IGP-M: 17.78%.
Change of -3.18%: the amount shrinks.
Cumulative 63.86%.
Cumulative 44.65%, far below IGP-M.
IPCA (IBGE) measures inflation for households earning 1 to 40 minimum wages and is the Central Bank target index. INPC (IBGE) covers households earning 1 to 5 minimum wages, with more weight on food and transport. IGP-M (FGV) combines wholesale (60%), consumer (30%) and construction (10%) prices, so it reacts fast to the exchange rate and commodities and swings much more. In 2020, for example, IGP-M closed at 23.14% and IPCA at 4.52%.
Multiply the amount by (1 + change/100) for each month in the period. In the tool, choose IGP-M and enter the amount and the months: it shows the factor, the cumulative percentage and the monthly table.
It can, and it has been for entire years: 2009, 2017, 2023 and 2025. When the cumulative figure is negative, the tool shows the reduced amount and the purchasing power as a gain. The contract defines whether the drop lowers the value.
FGV releases IGP-M at the end of its own reference month, earlier than IPCA, which comes out around the 10th of the following month. That is why IGP-M usually has one more month in the data.
Only if the contract allows it or both parties agree. The tool lets you compare both results side by side to support the conversation, but the index that counts is the one written in the contract.
IPCA (IBGE): the country's official inflation rate, the Central Bank target index.
E.g. your current salary or rent. Shows whether it kept up with inflation.
R$1,000.00 left idle in Sep 2026 buys what R$691.32 bought in Jan 2020: a 30.87% loss of purchasing power.
