IPCA (IBGE) measures inflation for households earning 1 to 40 minimum wages and is the Central Bank target index. INPC (IBGE) covers households earning 1 to 5 minimum wages, with more weight on food and transport. IGP-M (FGV) combines wholesale (60%), consumer (30%) and construction (10%) prices, so it reacts fast to the exchange rate and commodities and swings much more. In 2020, for example, IGP-M closed at 23.14% and IPCA at 4.52%.
By IPCA, R$ 1,000.00 from January 2010 is equivalent to R$ 2,550.33 in Sep 2026. The value grows with each new IPCA, and the tool uses the latest month available.
No. It is just the value the money would need to keep its purchasing power. An investment that paid more than IPCA over the period gained purchasing power, and one that paid less lost it.
IPCA tracks consumer prices. IGP-M also includes wholesale and construction, so it reacts more to the exchange rate. Over long periods the two drift apart, and the contract says which one applies.
