IPCA (IBGE) measures inflation for households earning 1 to 40 minimum wages and is the Central Bank target index. INPC (IBGE) covers households earning 1 to 5 minimum wages, with more weight on food and transport. IGP-M (FGV) combines wholesale (60%), consumer (30%) and construction (10%) prices, so it reacts fast to the exchange rate and commodities and swings much more. In 2020, for example, IGP-M closed at 23.14% and IPCA at 4.52%.
By IPCA, 797.71% from July 1994 to Sep 2026. By INPC it is 816.54% and by IGP-M 1,248.90%, each through its latest published month.
The real entered circulation on July 1, 1994, under the Itamar Franco government, which is why the tool data starts in July of that year.
IGP-M gives 60% of its weight to wholesale prices, which react fast to the dollar and commodities, and only 30% to retail. In the real devaluations, such as 1999 and 2002, it rises far more than IPCA.
