Counting text sounds trivial, but the real question is almost always more specific: how many characters fit in a bio, whether spaces count, how many words the text has and how long it takes to read. This tool analyzes the text you paste in real time and shows, all at once, characters (with and without spaces), words, unique words, lines, paragraphs, sentences and Unicode code points. Words are detected by a pattern that understands Latin accents, apostrophes and hyphens, and reading time is estimated at 225 words per minute (and speaking time at 150). Everything runs in your browser, without sending anything to servers, so you can paste drafts, emails or sensitive text with peace of mind. It is handy for writing posts within a social-media limit, tuning SEO titles and meta descriptions, sizing captions and checking assignments with a minimum word count.
The tool breaks each aspect of the text into its own metric. Characters are counted as units of the text, with a total version (including spaces) and one without spaces or line breaks, the distinction that matters most in fields with a limit. Words come from a pattern that recognizes Unicode letters and numbers, including accents, and treats internal apostrophes and hyphens as part of the word ("mother-in-law" counts as one). Sentences are delimited by . ! ?, paragraphs by blank lines, and code points reflect the real count of Unicode symbols, which can differ from the character count when there are emojis or composed characters.
The times are estimates based on word count: silent reading at 225 words per minute and speaking aloud at 150. They are rounded up to at least 1 minute and serve as a quick reference, not an exact stopwatch, the real speed varies with language, difficulty and the reader.
Example 1, the sentence "Hello, world!": that is 13 characters counting the space and 12 without it; 2 words ("Hello" and "world"); 1 sentence, ended by the exclamation mark; and 1 line. The comma and the exclamation mark count as characters, but not as letters or words.
Example 2, platform limits: an X (Twitter) post allows 280 characters and a Google meta description is usually cut off near 155–160. If your caption is 172 characters, the tool's limits panel shows right away that it exceeds a meta description limit but fits comfortably in an X post, letting you trim the right sentences before publishing.
The counter helps in any situation with a size limit or target: fitting a bio or a tweet, tuning a title (~60 characters) and meta description for Google, sizing captions, meeting the minimum word count of an essay or estimating how long a script runs on air. Seeing characters, words and time side by side avoids juggling between tools.
It is worth knowing the limits of the count. Different platforms may count spaces, line breaks, emojis and composed characters in their own way, so another system's number can differ by a few points, especially with emojis, which can be worth more than one character internally. Reading and speaking times are averages and do not replace a real test, and length is not quality: a text at the right limit still has to be clear and well organized.
