Before any lookup, the tool calculates the last two digits (check digits) from the first twelve, using a weighted algorithm with modulo 11. If the digits provided do not match the calculated ones, the CNPJ is treated as invalid and the query is not even sent. Validation accepts both the numeric CNPJ and the new alphanumeric CNPJ from the Federal Revenue Service (letters in the first 12 positions, check digits always numeric). Keep in mind that a formally valid CNPJ merely follows the mathematical rule of the digits, it does not mean the company exists, is active, or is trustworthy.
