Does "ACTIVE" guarantee the company is up to date with taxes?
No. "ACTIVE" only indicates that the CNPJ was not closed, suspended or declared unfit with the Federal Revenue, the status describes the registration, not tax or labor compliance. For that, you need specific compliance certificates and, if the amount involved is significant, an accounting or legal review before contracting or signing.
Can I look up a branch separately from the headquarters?
Yes. Each establishment has its own CNPJ, sharing the headquarters' 8-digit root and varying only the next 4 digits (0001 for the headquarters, 0002 onward for each branch). To see the data for that specific unit, such as address and registration status, enter the branch's full CNPJ, not just the headquarters'.
Is a CNPJ with correct check digits always a real company?
No. Check-digit validation (modulo 11) only confirms that the number follows the CNPJ's mathematical construction rule, whether in the numeric or alphanumeric format. It does not guarantee that company exists in the Federal Revenue registry: only the actual database lookup that follows confirms that.
