Calculate INSS contribution time with period merging, carência, special-time conversion, and grace period.
Before thinking about retirement, you need to know exactly how long you have already contributed, and that sum is deceptive, because employment periods can overlap and must not be counted twice. This tool adds up multiple CNIS contribution periods, detects and merges the overlaps (counting each day only once), estimates carência (the approximate count of monthly contributions), and shows, side by side, the age reference from the definitive rule (65 for men, 62 for women, EC 103/2019 art. 19) and the score from the points rule (age plus contribution time, EC 103/2019 art. 15, which rises 1 point per year). It also converts special time (hazardous or unhealthy activity) into common time using the official factors for 15, 20, or 25 years, but only for the period worked through 12/11/2019, the vested right preserved by the reform; and it calculates the grace period, meaning how long you keep insured status without contributing (12, 24, or 36 months depending on the case, art. 15 of Law 8.213/1991). Contribution time is the sum of the days you contributed, converted into years, months and days. Carência is a different thing: it is the number of monthly contributions required to be entitled to a benefit, now fixed at 180 months (15 years) for most programmed benefits. A person can have plenty of contribution time and still lack carência, or vice versa, which is why the tool shows both separately. Note that for individual, self-employed, and domestic contributors, carência depends on competências actually paid, not just the period worked; the figure shown here is an approximation (days ÷ 30).
Overlapping periods are the most common trap. If you held two jobs at the same time, the shared days do not count twice. The calculator merges the intervals and counts each day only once, avoiding the overestimate that appears when each period is summed in isolation.
Anyone who worked exposed to hazardous or unhealthy agents can convert that special time into common time, using a factor that depends on the activity's risk grade (classified at 15, 20, or 25 years): the factor is the full contribution time (35 years for men, 30 for women) divided by the grade, giving 2.33/2.00 for 15 years, 1.75/1.50 for 20 years, and 1.40/1.20 for 25 years (men/women). EC 103/2019 banned new conversions for time worked from 13/11/2019 onward, but preserved as a vested right the conversion of special time already completed through 12/11/2019 (art. 25, §2). That is why the tool only applies the bonus to the portion of the period before that date.
The grace period (art. 15, Law 8.213/1991) is how long you remain insured by INSS even without contributing, essential to keep your right to benefits like sickness pay. The general rule gives 12 months after contributions stop; that period rises to 24 months if the last continuous job totaled 120 monthly contributions without interruption, and can reach 36 months if, on top of that, unemployment is proven with the labor agency.
The score shown adds age to years of contribution and is compared against the points rule's minimum (EC 103/2019, art. 15), which rises 1 point per year since 2019: in 2026 it is 103 points for men and 93 for women, with a minimum of 35 and 30 years of contribution respectively, up to a ceiling of 105 (men) and 100 (women). The minimum age shown as a reference is instead the definitive rule's (EC 103/2019, art. 19: 65 for men, 62 for women), which is independent of the score, you do not need to reach both at once.
