Look up public judicial case metadata in real time via the CNJ DataJud API.
DataJud (National Judiciary Database) is a centralized repository of procedural information maintained by the CNJ, created by CNJ Resolution 331/2020. It gathers metadata for cases from virtually all Brazilian courts, procedural class, subject, adjudicating body, parties, and the movement timeline, standardized by the CNJ's National Movements Table. Queries use the unique CNJ number, in the NNNNNNN-DD.AAAA.J.TR.OOOO format defined by CNJ Resolution 65/2008, whose check digit this tool validates locally before sending anything, and the court is derived from the J (segment) and TR (court) fields. The number travels through a secure server proxy to the public API, and neither the number nor the result is stored, only an anonymous usage count is recorded. Right now, automatic court derivation covers State Justice (segment 8, all 27 state courts); other segments, such as Federal, Labor, and Electoral Justice, are not yet supported by this tool. Because it relies on the public database, cases under judicial secrecy or involving confidential information are not returned; availability and updates depend on each court and may lag by up to 24 hours.
DataJud was created by CNJ Resolution 331/2020 as the National Judiciary Database: a single repository to which courts send the metadata of their cases. Before it, checking a case meant logging into each court's own system, each with its own format. The DataJud public API unifies that access: with the CNJ number, you retrieve class, subject, adjudicating body, parties, and movements in a standardized form.
The standardization comes from the CNJ's National Movements Table and unified procedural tables, which give the same name to each step in any court. That is what lets you compare cases from different states without translating local terminology. The tool merely consumes this public database, it does not create or interpret data, it only organizes it for reading.
The unique number has 20 digits in the NNNNNNN-DD.AAAA.J.TR.OOOO format (CNJ Resolution 65/2008). NNNNNNN is the case sequence; DD is the check digit; AAAA is the filing year; J indicates the branch of the Judiciary; TR identifies the court within that branch; and OOOO, the originating unit. The tool uses exactly this layout: it validates the check digit locally and derives the court from the J and TR fields.
In practice, you paste the number with or without punctuation and the tool does the rest. If the check digit does not match, it warns you before querying, avoiding a useless API call. If the number is valid but nothing comes back, it is usually because the court has not yet submitted the case, it is under judicial secrecy, or the branch (J) is not yet supported by automatic court derivation.
The public API does not return cases under judicial secrecy or those involving confidential information or minors, for those, you must access the court's system with a digital certificate and standing. Coverage is also uneven: some courts feed the database with up to a 24-hour delay or only partially, so the absence of a step here does not mean it is missing from the case file.
Moreover, the tool shows the most recent movements, not the full history, for the complete record, go to the court's system. Nothing is stored on your side: the number passes through a proxy and is discarded. For decisions that depend on the case status (deadline counting, for example), always confirm in the official system and, where appropriate, with a lawyer.
Paste the code into your HTML and the tool shows up on your page, without J-Kit's navigation and ads. It still runs in the browser of whoever visits your site.
